Bay Area leaders pitch sales tax to save BART, Muni, regional transit

Bay Area leaders, including state senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguín, have proposed a sales tax to fund regional transit systems like BART, Muni, Caltrain, and AC Transit, aiming to prevent severe service cuts due to declining ridership and financial challenges. The Connect Bay Area Act, or Senate Bill 63, suggests a 2026 ballot measure for a half-cent sales tax in San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties, with an option for San Francisco to increase it to 1 cent for additional Muni funding. Without this new funding source, transit agencies may face drastic reductions in service, including station closures, reduced operating hours, and mass layoffs.

Morgan Hill’s Amphitheater Grounds and Depot Street will host a lively family-friendly festival celebrating all things mushroom, complete with gourmet dishes, a Mushroom Expo, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, and two stages of live entertainment. Headliners include Heart by Heart (featuring members of HEART) and the popular dance/party band Entourage. Visitors can enjoy a variety of beverages at beer and wine gardens, sample an eclectic range of food, and explore Munchkinland rides and games for kids.

Monthly retail sales from the US Commerce Department

According to Commerce Department data reported by Retail Dive, February retail sales in core segments were essentially flat year over year, while e-commerce rose 1.7%. Factoring in the leap day last February, volumes were down by as much as 3.5%, reflecting broad weakness across categories: electronics sales plunged more than 9%, sporting goods fell nearly 6%, and apparel slipped 3.2%, driving a 7.5% drop at department stores.
