Morgan Hill held its first Viva Calle open streets event

Morgan Hill hosted its first Viva Calle open streets event on Nov. 2, temporarily closing 2.5 miles of roadway to cars and opening them for walking, biking, and community activities. The 10 a.m.–2 p.m. event brought the popular open-streets model—well established in cities like San Jose—into South County for the first time, aiming to promote active transportation and support local businesses.

The event was funded through a grant from Santa Clara County Supervisor Silvia Arenas, who has long advocated for bringing the concept to the region. Viva Calle’s founder in San Jose, Ed Sothis, noted that open streets events encourage physical activity and strengthen community connection, offering residents a safe, car-free public space to explore.
